Giacomo Guardi
Born : 1764Died : 1835
Giacomo Guardi (1764–1835), a Venetian painter and draughtsman, worked in the studio of his father Francesco. After his father’s death, he continued the family business, producing both adaptations of the paternal style and compositions of his own. His Piazzetta at Museum Boijmans, drawn in pen and grey wash, places the Doge’s Palace and the Biblioteca Marciana on either side of the perspective.
The Milan drawing Bacino di San Marco con San Giorgio Maggiore, made between 1780 and 1800, uses brown ink and sepia wash. Formerly attributed to Francesco, the sheet is now assigned to Giacomo. Small figures, boats and sailing vessels animate the surroundings of the Riva degli Schiavoni and the lagoon.
