Georges Papazoff was born in Yambol in 1894 and died in Vence in 1972. He settled in Paris in 1924 after stays in central Europe. Close to Surrealist experimentation, he retained his independence from the official group. His relationships with Nils Dardel and the collector Rolf de Maré supported exhibitions in Stockholm and lasting exchanges with Sweden.
During the 1920s he experimented with frottage and sand compositions. Rêverie, dated 1925 at the Centre Pompidou, combines sand and oil paint on canvas. Other series draw on memories: the Éclaireurs refer to soldiers using lanterns to reconnoitre the terrain. Pictorial matter and recollection thus provide different starting points for distinct groups of works within his practice.
