The French painter and draughtsman Gaston Balande, born in Madrid in 1880 and died in Paris in 1971, developed his career through training in Paris, painting from life and exploring landscapes in France and abroad. Living in Saujon during his childhood, he first taught himself to draw by copying the engravings and chromolithographs he discovered at the market. Admitted to the École nationale des arts décoratifs in Paris, he attended evening classes while continuing his daytime jobs. He then frequented the studios of Jean-Paul Laurens and Rupert Bunny, before officially joining Fernand Cormon’s studio at the École des beaux-arts in 1909.
In 1905, he showed Quai d’Orsay en hiver at the Salon des artistes français and received the prix Édouard-Lemaître, awarded by the Institut. At the 1907 Salon, Le Départ pour la pêche, a work in a naturalist vein, earned him a second-class medal. Recruited in 1917 by the Beaux-Arts administration for artistic missions with the armies, Balande was sent to Nieuport and Verdun. The following year, his family took refuge in La Rochelle and then settled in Lauzières, in the Pays d’Aunis, which Balande explored through painting.
In La Rochelle, he met Albert Marquet in 1920 and accompanied him on painting sessions from life. Exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1921, the canvas Un beau jour d’été was acquired by the State for the musée du Luxembourg. Since acquiring a studio in 1925, located in a farm in Senneville, a commune of Guerville, he frequented the area around Mantes. The meanders of the Seine and the area around Senneville became the subject of a long series of landscapes of Île-de-France; their handling, described as rich and vibrant, continued until the Second World War. The presentation of Camping at the Société nationale des beaux-arts accompanied his election as a member of that Salon.
During his 1929 trip to Morocco, Balande travelled across the country from east to west and returned with colourful studies made on the spot. Invited twice to the Venice Biennale, he also took part in exhibitions in Brazil, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and the United States.
