Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer’s flower painting belongs both to still life and to the decorative arts: his compositions are also known through prints and tapestry cartoons. Fleurs, fruits et objets d’art, an oil on canvas dated 1665, is an example held at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier; the work measures 142 × 184.5 cm.
Having left for Antwerp at a young age, he trained there in drawing and painting, according to the available sources. Arriving in Paris in 1655, he took part in the decoration of the Hôtel Lambert and the Hôtel de Lauzun. From 1658, he worked for Charles Le Brun and, in this capacity, contributed to the decoration of several royal residences: Vincennes, Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Marly and the Tuileries. His institutional career includes his admission to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1665, followed by his appointment as a councillor in 1679.
From 1666, Monnoyer worked regularly with the Gobelins manufactory, for which he designed, among other things, crowns and tapestry borders. He also contributed, with Guy Louis Vernansal and Blin de Fontenay, to the cartoons for the series Histoire de l’Empereur de Chine. His floral compositions were also disseminated through Le Livre de toutes les sortes de fleurs d’après nature, published between 1670 and 1680: the plates, based on his creations, were engraved by Jean Vauquier. In 1685, he travelled to London at the invitation of Lord Ralph Montagu, the English ambassador to France. There he worked, among other places, for Burlington House, Kensington Palace and Hampton Court.
