Fred Deux (1924–2015), a French draughtsman and writer, grew up in a working-class family in Boulogne-Billancourt. After factory work and the Resistance, he worked in a Marseille bookshop, discovering Surrealist literature and modern painting. Encountering Paul Klee’s work in 1948 encouraged his self-taught commitment to drawing. His partner Cécile Reims translated many of his compositions into copper engravings.
His drawings often begin with an ink stain, developed into networks of forms through cycles that revisit and transform earlier motifs. Writing accompanied this exploration, notably La Gana, published under the pseudonym Jean Douassot. He also embarked on an extensive spoken autobiography combining memory and fiction. Two hundred hours of these recordings entered the Bibliothèque nationale de France in 1999. He settled in La Châtre in 1985.
This profile brings together identity references for Fred Deux and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
