Eugène Brouillard

Born : 1870Died : 1950Documented citizenships : France

The painter Eugène Antoine Brouillard, born and deceased in Lyon, pursues two occupations: his work as a draughtsman provides his livelihood and financial independence, while his landscapes of the Lyonnais develop a personal approach, described as close to Pointillism. He uses broad, regular brushstrokes to indicate planes and volumes.

As an adolescent, he works while attending evening classes in lace drawing, then trains as a draughtsman, a profession he pursues to earn his living and preserve his independence. A self-taught artist, he learns through the works that attract him, particularly those by Carrand, Corot and Puvis de Chavannes; the source mentions the Nabis and the Pont-Aven School with reservation. Other artists in whom he takes an interest or who inspire him include Signac, Ravier and Vernay; one source also mentions the Fauves and Théodore Rivière. Brouillard is described as a friend of the painters Francisque Pomat and Bruno Guillermin, as well as the writer Pierre Aguétant, whose poems he illustrates.

He exhibits at the Salon d’automne in Lyon in 1904, then presents L’Approche de la Tempête there in 1907, retitled Les Furies. In 1920, he creates eighteen panels on the theme of the Poème des saisons, des arbres et des eaux for the wedding hall of the town hall in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement; the panels are recorded at this same location. In 1937, he takes part with several other artists in decorating the Lyon pavilion at the Paris Exposition universelle.

Several of Brouillard’s works are held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, including Convoitise, an oil painting on canvas. He is appointed an officer of the Instruction publique in 1922 and a knight of the Légion d’honneur in 1934.
