Eugène Baboulène

Born : 1905Died : 1994Documented citizenships : France

The figurative painter and lithographer Eugène Louis Baboulène, born and deceased in Toulon (1905–1994), devoted a significant part of his work to seascapes and Provençal landscapes, which he rendered in harmonies of pastel tones. La Vieille cour, an oil on canvas measuring 89 × 115 cm held at the Musée d’art de Toulon, is among the documented works of his career.

In Paris, he worked nights as a retoucher for the newspaper L’Intransigeant. On his return to Toulon in 1931, he worked as a decorator in brothels and at the city theatre, before being appointed professor of decoration at the École des beaux-arts de Toulon in 1936. His meetings with Antoni Clavé and Antoni Tàpies in 1946 are reported to have led him to leave decoration behind and devote himself to painting. His work also included illustration and lithography: he illustrated Le Pirate de l’air, published in Paris in 1938, and produced sixteen lithographs to accompany poems by Léon Vérane.

From 1950 onwards, his exhibitions were held in France and abroad, notably in Paris, Geneva, London, New York, Tokyo and Madrid. His works are held at the Musée Calvet in Avignon, the Musée d’art de Pully and the Prints and Photography Department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
