Trained in Monaco, Emmanuel Bellini studied drawing before joining an architecture firm; his work, developed over fifty years of artistic activity, encompasses nearly forty themes. He studied at the École de dessin du Rocher from 1919 and graduated in 1922. During this training, Professor Colombo taught him to draw sculpture in the round in charcoal and allowed him to work in watercolour. On completing his studies, Bellini joined the office of the architect Charles Dalmas.
Among the recurring motifs in his work is the cart, or carriage. The subjects recorded also include clowns and the circus, flowers, architectural elements and domes, as well as depictions of Venice, Paris, Nantes and Monaco, and the French Revolution. His work also included the creation of wall frescoes: at the Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Ormeau in Seillans in 1956, and then at the Palm Beach casino in Cannes in 1969.
In 1949, he exhibited in Cannes, notably at the Galerie Martin Cruson and in the hall of the Grosso company. In Paris, he presented his work several times at the Galerie Paul Pétridès, from 1951 to 1976. He took part in the International Painting Exhibition in Budapest in 1981 and 1985. A retrospective was presented at the Sporting d’hiver de Monte-Carlo in 1984, the year of his 80th birthday.
Works by Bellini are listed in the collections of the Musée des beaux-arts de Nice, the Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington. Two books devoted to the artist were published, respectively, by Jean Bouret in 1950 and Jean Bresson in 1979.
