SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
A French painter born in Paris in 1913 and deceased in 1999, Claude Venard is associated with post-Cubism and still life. Sources describe a personal post-Cubist style, built with a broad palette and a vigorous application of paint with a palette knife. The thick impasto accents the chromatic qualities of the palette.
In 1936, Venard takes part in a group exhibition associated with the Forces Nouvelles group. Two years later, while working as a restorer at the Louvre according to one source, he takes part in the Deuxième Salon de la Nouvelle Génération and launches the manifesto Rupture. After the war, he devotes himself entirely to painting.
From the 1950s onwards, he exhibits in Europe and the United States. Works by the artist are noted in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the Whitney Museum, the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris, the museum of Tokyo and the museum of São Paulo.
This profile brings together identity references for Claude Venard and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
