The French painter Christian Caillard was born in Clichy in 1899 and died in Paris in 1985. He divided his life between his Paris studio and numerous stays far afield. After his first trip to Morocco in 1927, he travelled, among other places, to Indochina, Bali, Tahiti and Martinique. After studying at Collège Rollin, he applied to the École centrale. Called up and assigned to the artillery in 1918, he gave up science on returning to civilian life to devote himself to painting; in 1921, he attended the Académie Biloul for a few months. His meeting with Maurice Loutreuil in 1923 played a role in his training: Loutreuil offered him advice, friendship and guidance. Caillard received the Prix Blumenthal in 1934.

From 1935, his studio was at 6, rue Clauzel, in Paris’s 9th arrondissement, where he remained until his death. It was there that he brought back the canvases he had painted during his travels. Called up again in 1939, he was taken prisoner in the Vosges in 1940; released in June 1941, he resumed painting. From 1945, he settled in Brittany, whose wild, solitary heathlands he appreciated, and later divided his time between the region, Paris and Saint-Tropez. Brittany also appears in the title of a work held in a public collection: Ferme en Bretagne, executed on Isorel hardboard mounted on a stretcher and measuring 54 × 65 cm, is held at the Musée des beaux-arts de Brest.

His work was the subject of a retrospective at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in 1963, followed by a solo exhibition at the Galerie de Paris in 1969. After his death, the Galerie Jean-Pierre Joubert paid tribute to him in 1986; the City of Paris devoted a retrospective to him in 1997. In 2021, an exhibition organised by the association Ar(t) Stiff at the Phare du Stiff lighthouse, on the island of Ouessant, presented his work again. An auction catalogue also describes Paysage espagnol as a signed oil on panel, measuring 65 × 81 cm.
