Claude Monet

Born : 1840Died : 1926Documented citizenships : France

Claude Monet (1840–1926), also known as Claude Oscar Monet, is described by the Art Institute of Chicago as a pioneer of Impressionism, a French art movement. Over the course of his long career, he painted those close to him and the places he knew best, advocating painting outdoors: he made his compositions outside, then reworked and sometimes completed them in his studio.

His early subjects include the forests of Fontainebleau, the boulevards of Paris, suburban villages along the Seine, coastal towns and flower-filled fields. After buying a house in Giverny, northwest of Paris, wheatstacks and water lilies became some of his motifs. In Giverny, he painted water lilies in the water garden he tended, around a small pond crossed by a Japanese bridge. The wheatstacks, forms shaped by human hands but derived from nature, represented for him a symbol of sustenance and survival.

In his series paintings, Monet adapted his palette and brushwork to the conditions of each moment in order to convey the complexity of colour, light and texture. He believed this approach allowed him to render “what I experience”: his perception of and response to subjects transformed by light, air, the passage of time and the seasons. The CulturaItalia entry attributes Ninfee rosa, dated around 1897–1899, to Monet: it describes a pond with three pink water lilies and numerous lily pads. The work, an oil painting on canvas measuring 81 × 100, is located at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome.

The Art Institute of Chicago lists the exhibition 20 Works by Claude Monet, held from 18 to 28 March 1895. It also lists Monet and Chicago, shown from 5 September to 16 November 2020, and then from 11 February to 14 June 2021.
