German painter Curt Ehrhardt, born in Saxony in 1895 and deceased in Schwarz, Hesse, in 1972, situated his work within a quest that he wanted to be both spiritual and social. He interrupted his studies in law to devote himself to painting and approach it from this perspective. Moving away from certain aspects of the Expressionist style, he then produced mainly works without colour. The destruction of the human figure particularly held his attention, as evidenced by the numerous watercolour sketches he devoted to this subject.
In 1916, a visit to the «Der Sturm» touring exhibition in Berlin gave him the opportunity to see works by Picasso, Schwitters and Marc. He joined the Novembergruppe, founded in 1918. His exhibition activity took him to the Dresden Secession in 1919, to Berlin in 1920, then to an exhibition of the Munich Expressionists in Chicago in 1921 and to Düsseldorf in 1922.
He continued his work as a painter during the Nazi period and was called up in 1939. After the war, he continued to work. In 1966, he left the German Democratic Republic to settle in Schwarz, Hesse, where he hoped to benefit from greater freedom. «Mond - Licht - Spiegel», an oil on cardboard dated 1921 and measuring 57.6 × 43.3 cm, provides a documented example of his work.
This profile brings together identity references for Curt Ehrhardt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
