The French painter, lithographer and illustrator Bernard Robert André Cathelin made colour the organizing principle of his work: his compositions bring colours and tones together in arrangements of contrast or affinity. This exploration continued in his lithographs, in which he sought to give colour a material density comparable to that of his paintings.
Born and died in Paris (1919–2004), he studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs from 1945 to 1948, in the studio of Maurice Brianchon. He received the Blumenthal Prize in 1950. He began his works in his studio in Montéléger and sometimes completed them in Paris.
His travels, particularly in Latin America—especially Mexico—as well as in Japan, Italy and Spain, were an important source for his work. His exhibition history includes presentations in France, Switzerland, the United States in 1954, Canada, Germany and China. His lithographic work is documented in particular by Roger Passeron’s book Cathelin lithographe, published in Nice by De Francony in 1987.
