Bernard Boutet de Monvel

Born : 1881Died : 1949Documented citizenships : France

The son of the painter and illustrator Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel, he studied painting with Luc-Olivier Merson from 1897, then sculpture with Jean Dampt. Initiated in 1898 by Louis McClellan Potter, his practice of etching turned towards colour printing with registration. The Studio devoted an article to these prints as early as 1901; in 1912, the Art Institute of Chicago dedicated a retrospective to them.

He exhibited at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts from 1903, and later also at the Salon d’automne and the Salon des indépendants. From 1907, he regularly took part in exhibitions at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. Alongside painting and printmaking, he produced humorous illustrations and fashion drawings for Femina and Jardin des modes nouvelles. Paul Poiret engaged him from 1908; after meeting the publisher Lucien Vogel in 1911, he collaborated with the Gazette du bon ton, whose first issue appeared in November 1912.

Mobilised as a reservist during the First World War, he was wounded at the Battle of the Marne, then served as a bombardier in aviation. Posted to Morocco, he stayed in Fez from October 1917 to March 1919. In 1918, he painted the city and its inhabitants; Ruelle à Fès (Maroc), dated that year and described as an oil on canvas, bears witness to this work. According to the entry devoted to this work, he prepared his compositions from photographic images, deriving their lines of force and geometric forms before painting from the motif. His Moroccan paintings and bas-reliefs were exhibited in 1925 at the Henri Barbazanges gallery.
