Ghada Amer

Documented citizenships : Egypt

Born in Cairo, Ghada Amer studied at the Villa Arson in Nice and then in Paris before settling in New York in 1996. Her practice encompasses painting, sculpture and installation. She brings embroidery into painting to question the status assigned to women’s labour and the hierarchy separating fine art from activities associated with craft.

Her female figures assert autonomy against representations that reduce women to objects of the gaze. In The Little Girl, a work of 2001 held by the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, acrylic and embroidery meet on canvas. Repeated, overlapping contours form a dense pattern in which individual figures become difficult to distinguish. The thread thus shapes the image and its perception.

This profile brings together identity references for Ghada Amer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
