Bullfights, stud farms, racecourses and seashores are the main subjects of Claude Grosperrin’s work. The critic Gérald Schurr notes in these compositions a deliberately limited range of tones and a unity of style which he cautiously attributes to the quality of the light. In 1956, Grosperrin studies with Maurice Brianchon at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, then attends the École supérieure des arts appliqués Duperré. He lives and works in Montmartre, notably at the Cité Montmartre-aux-artistes, rue Ordener. He receives the Prix Farman in 1959.

His exhibition career begins early: he participates in the Salon de la Jeune Peinture in Paris from 1955 to 1959, then in the Salon d’automne in 1960. He takes part in the Biennale de Paris in 1959 and 1961; in the latter year, Les Dahlias is shown there. In 1960, he is also included in the exhibition Le cheval dans l’art, organised at the Galerie Wildenstein in London. His solo exhibitions include a presentation at the Galerie André Weil in Paris in 1959, followed by one at the Galerie Saluden in Brest in 1962. In New York, the Van der Straeten Gallery hosts his paintings in 1970; in 1974, the Eric Galleries present Les paddocks de Normandie, featuring equestrian scenes, landscapes and seascapes.

Works held in public collections provide a few reference points in his oeuvre. Haute-Isle, an oil on canvas from 1959, is held by the Fonds national d’art contemporain. Le galop, painted in 1967, belongs to the Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg. Nature morte, an oil on canvas from 1963, is listed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Angers on deposit from the Centre national des arts plastiques. Other works are listed in the collections of the Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris, the Musée Ludwig in Cologne, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Seattle Art Museum. Claude Grosperrin dies in Paris on 16 July 1977.
