Max Stahlschmidt

Born : 1854Died : 1918

Born in Berlin on 22 July 1854, Max Ferdinand Alfred Stahlschmidt first trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, where he studied from 1885 under Paul Friedrich Meyerheim and Eugen Bracht, and then at the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Fine Arts in Weimar, under Albert Brendel and Max Thedy. From 1899, he taught at the Weimar Art School and was a member of the Weimarer Radierverein. Around 1914, he established a studio in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

His exhibition career took him to Weimar, Berlin, Dresden, Düsseldorf and the Glaspalast in Munich. In 1893, two of his paintings were shown at the World’s Fair in Chicago; larger groups of works were subsequently presented at the Kunstsalon Emil Richter in Dresden in 1907 and at the Kunst- und Gewerbehalle in Hanover in 1909. In the summer of 1902, he painted in Ostholstein with Christian Rohlfs and Carl Arp.

Works recorded in the collection of the Jürgen und Maria Elisabeth Rasmus Stiftung in Hamburg include Auf der Weide in den Vierlanden, an oil on canvas measuring 68.5 × 55.5 cm, dated around 1888, and Sommertag, also an oil on canvas, dated around 1895 and measuring 112 × 137 cm. The catalogues also list a range of subjects: Lichtung mit Rehen im Mondschein, an oil on canvas signed “Mx. Stahlschmidt”; Am Pferderennen, an oil on cardboard measuring 25.5 × 33 cm; Wild auf der Waldlichtung, an oil painting on canvas dated around 1900; and Auf dem Rennplatz, an oil on panel dated around 1910, whose signature “Max Stahlschmidt” is difficult to read.
