Pieter de Molyn, also known as Molijn, was a Dutch painter and draughtsman baptised in London in 1595 who died in Haarlem in 1661. A master of the local guild from 1616, he helped develop tonal landscape painting during the 1620s. Landscape with Open Gate in Washington, around 1630–1635, combines a sandy road, a leaning gate and an expansive sky with fluid brushwork.
His repertoire also unfolds on paper. At the Morgan, Dune Landscape with Four Travelers and a Dog Resting in the Foreground combines black chalk and grey wash; several versions of the composition are known. Princeton's first plate of Different Landscapes with Figures, dated 1626, bears an inscription identifying him as maker and publisher. Painting, drawing and printmaking thus disseminate motifs of roads and people moving through the landscape.
