Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, known as Auguste Raffet, was a French artist whose practice encompassed drawing, printmaking, painting and illustration. Born in Paris on 2 March 1804, he died in Genoa on 16 February 1860. He attended evening classes at the Académie Suisse, where he met Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, who taught him lithographic drawing, and was then admitted in 1829 to Gros’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Early in his career, he worked as a porcelain painter for Cabannel, a supplier to the national manufactory at Sèvres.
After failing the painting competition for the Prix de Rome in 1831, he devoted himself mainly to lithographic drawing and watercolour. At the 1835 Salon, he presented a lithographic drawing inspired by the 1832 siege of Antwerp; he returned in 1852 with three lithographs based on scenes from the First Italian War of Independence and a painting connected with the Italian campaign of 1796. The military genre occupies a prominent place among his subjects, and Raffet is associated with the illustration of the Napoleonic legend. He drew, among other subjects, the siege of Antwerp, the conquest of Algeria and the siege of Rome by French troops in 1849. In Le Réveil, a fantastical composition, generals of the First Empire gather before the shadow of Napoleon I. In 1837, he took part in the scientific expedition to Russia led by Prince Anatole Demidoff. He was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour on 11 September 1849.
Two paintings devoted to the retreat from Russia are held at the Musée du Louvre. The Art Institute of Chicago lists, among other works, Napoleon in Egypt, dated 1835, and Russian Prisoners of Bomarsud, dated 1854. A retrospective entitled “Raffet, 1804–1860” was held at the Bibliothèque Marmottan in Boulogne-Billancourt from 24 March to 10 July 1999. Hector Giacomelli published a catalogue of his work in 1863.
