Émile Gilioli, a French sculptor born and deceased in Paris (1911–1977), grew up in a Parisian family of shoemakers of Italian origin. He spent part of his childhood and adolescence in Reggiolo, in Emilia, with a blacksmith: an early contact with workshop practice and materials. In 1932, he attended courses at the École des arts décoratifs de Nice, notably with Marie Raymond. He also practised life drawing at the Grande-Chaumière and attended the Académie Ranson.
In Grenoble, he met Andry Farcy, curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and introduced him to Cubism. From this period onwards, he broke with academicism and turned towards a sculpture based on spatial dynamism, while sometimes retaining Expressionist distortions. After the war, he made numerous visits to Brancusi; the latter’s influence on his work is described as impossible to overlook. He later worked in his studio in Saint-Martin-de-la-Cluze, near Grenoble, and divided his life between this commune and Paris. In 1956, he settled in the Paris district of Vaugirard, where his studio was also located. Direct carving played an important part in his practice and extended to resistant materials. In 1949, he was among the founding members of the Salon de la jeune sculpture. He was also appointed vice-president of the Espace group, led by André Bloc, Fernand Léger and Le Corbusier.
His work also encompassed creations integrated into architecture: in 1966, he designed a red, black and white mosaic with geometric motifs for the entrance hall of the Le Périscope building on avenue d’Italie in Paris. In 1971, he created four designs for plates in a limited edition at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. The Monument national à la Résistance on the Plateau des Glières, in Haute-Savoie, is dated 1973. In Paris, Gilioli exhibited at the Salon des Réalités nouvelles in 1947, then at the Denise René gallery in 1948. The gallery presented his sculptures, drawings and tapestries again in 1955. In 1997, the Musée Maillol organised an exhibition in his honour in Paris, from 27 February to 15 May. Works are also listed in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Kunsthaus Zürich.
This profile brings together identity references for Émile Gilioli and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
