Jan Brueghel the Younger continued the activity of his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, in Antwerp. Having travelled to Italy in 1622, he took over the family workshop in 1625 after his father’s death. He painted landscapes, garlands and allegories while maintaining a practice of collaboration with figure specialists. This arrangement brought different hands into a single composition without reducing his work to copies of paternal models.
The Getty’s Landscape with Ceres, made in the 1630s with Hendrik van Balen, presents the agricultural goddess as a personification of Earth. Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum also preserves a sheet of studies of women washing linen. Pen, brown ink and grey or brown washes demonstrate his activity as a draughtsman alongside the production of paintings.
