Under the name Antoine Blanchard, Marcel Masson developed a landscape practice whose preferred subjects were the walls of Montmartre and the Paris suburbs. He also painted scenes of Paris in the 1900s, adopting a lighter palette for these works. The entry reports that the pseudonym Antoine Blanchard came from a name he chose at random from a telephone directory.
Initially trained in drawing in Blois, he entered the École des beaux-arts de Rennes in 1929, then enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in 1932. The entry states that he received the Prix de Rome in 1935, after three years of study. He began his career as a decorator for theatre and cinema. When he turned to easel painting, Vlaminck advised him. He almost entirely stopped drawing to help his father in the family business, and did not take it up again until 1948.
His works were exhibited at the Galerie Marie Wild and at the Salon des Indépendants, of which he was a member. At the 1958 salon, he presented three paintings: Rue des Norvins sous la neige, Mairie du Vieux-Montmartre and Devant l’église Saint-Pierre. The City of Paris acquired five paintings by Marcel Masson. His exhibition history includes a presentation at the Café de la Paix in Paris in 1979, followed by an exhibition devoted to Antoine Blanchard and Paris during the Belle Époque at the Wally Findlay Gallery in Chicago in 1988.
