The French painter André Utter, born in Paris in 1886 and deceased there in 1948, pursued his artistic career in the circle of Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo. Introduced to painting by Valadon, he was self-taught; within the trio, he also took part in managing their careers and acted as their business manager. In 1909, he worked as an electrician at the substation on avenue Trudaine. He married Valadon in 1914, before leaving for the war. In 1923, he bought the Château de Saint-Bernard, in the Ain department: the site became a meeting place for the trio outside Montmartre, with each member having a studio.
Works recorded around 1909–1910 testify to the diversity of his early subjects and media: a Still Life with Pipe made using collage, a Self-Portrait with Antique Mask, and a Portrait of Maurice Utrillo, oil on cardboard, dated 1910. From that same year, Utter also painted landscapes, including views of rue Cortot, where his studio was located. Thereafter, his work consisted mainly of portraits and still lifes. The entry notes a Cubist influence and a softer tonality after the First World War. In 1925, he illustrated Oscar Wilde’s Théâtre à lire, in Cecil Georges-Bazile’s translation, published by Delpeuch.
Several works are recorded in French public collections: the Portrait of Maurice Utrillo at the musée national d’Art moderne in Paris; a Still Life with Stool at the musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi; and the Bowl of Fruit of 1911, oil on paper, at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest. His work was presented in exhibitions devoted to this artistic milieu, notably Valadon, Utrillo, Utter à Saint-Bernard at the musée Paul-Dini in Villefranche-sur-Saône in 2011–2012, followed by Valadon, Utrillo et Utter, l’atelier de Montmartre 12, rue Cortot : 1912-1926 at the musée de Montmartre in Paris in 2015–2016. Utter was also among the artists featured in Peintres de Montmartre, presented in Pierrefitte in 2019.
