The French painter André Maire, born in Paris in 1898 and deceased in 1984, developed a body of work attentive to the places he travelled through and the cultures he encountered. His often lengthy journeys allowed him to observe both landscapes and their inhabitants.
From 1909, he attended the municipal drawing school on Place des Vosges. He later worked in André Devambez’s studio and received guidance from Émile Bernard. Called up at the end of 1917, he completed his military service in Indochina, where he taught drawing. During a later stay in Indochina, he was appointed professor of drawing and modelling at the École supérieure d’Architecture de Hanoï. His discovery of Angkor during this stay left a lasting impression on him. In Venice, he developed the sepia technique, suited to large decorative compositions in which his interest in architecture found expression.
From the 1930s onwards, Maire exhibited at the Charpentier and Georges Petit galleries in Paris, among others, as well as at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels. In 2015, the Alexis Pentcheff gallery organised a retrospective with his daughter Lorédana Harscoët-Maire, bringing together more than a hundred works. Works by the artist are held at the musée Guimet and the musée du quai Branly. Publications devoted to him include André Maire, peintre voyageur, published by Somogy in 2000, and Angkor, le Cambodge d’André Maire, published by the same publisher in 2005.
This profile brings together identity references for André Maire and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
6 references are documented at Dobiaschofsky, Genève Enchères, Piguet. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
