Nedko Solakov builds narratives with words as much as with images and objects. Born in Bulgaria in 1957 and trained in Sofia and Antwerp, he developed work critically engaging with his social surroundings from the 1980s onward. His installations bring together texts, photographs and sculptures, using humour to question behaviour and conventions. The ink drawing A mediocre magician…, from Complicated (Stupid) Stories (2006), exemplifies the importance of small stories within this practice. His painting also revisits models drawn from German Romanticism. A participant in international biennials since the 1990s, Solakov received an honourable mention at the Venice Biennale in 2007.
