The French figurative painter Alphonse Quizet (1885–1955), born in Paris, devoted a significant part of his work to the capital’s neighbourhoods and urban landscapes, particularly Montmartre, the Canal Saint-Martin and Le Pré-Saint-Gervais. According to his biography, he was self-taught and began painting in 1903 by copying the old masters at the Musée du Louvre.
He regularly exhibited at the Salon des indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. Rooted in his birthplace of Montmartre, he formed a lasting friendship with Maurice Utrillo; the biography consulted states that he guided and influenced him early in his career.
His repertoire ranges from the small streets of the Butte and its mills to views of Paris. Listed works include a Vue de Paris in oil on panel and a Voie ferrée de Ménilmontant à Paris in oil on canvas. In 1943, he created decorative panels for the town hall of Le Pré-Saint-Gervais.
The biography states that he was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur and that works are held at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Centre Pompidou. In May 2022, works by the artist were included in Genève Enchères’ “20th-Century and Contemporary Art” sale.
