French painter born in Andlau in 1839 and died in Paris in 1912, Alexis Kreyder is particularly known for his still lifes of flowers and fruit. Auction records document this aspect of his work with a Stillleben mit Erdbeeren, a signed oil on canvas dated 1879, and a Composition aux groseilles, also an oil on canvas. An auction catalogue lists a Vase de fleurs on its original canvas, signed and measuring 129 × 96 cm.
His training first takes him to Strasbourg, where he studies with Eugène Laville in 1855, then with Georges Zipélius and Fuchs, associated with Mulhouse. Settling in Paris in 1859, he works in industry for two to three years. Between 1863 and 1864, in Barbizon, he works with Théodore Rousseau and helps him carry out decorative works intended for Prince Demidoff. He takes part in the Salon from 1863 and exhibits there over the following three decades.
Among the recorded works are Rosier blanc, shown at the Salon in 1863, followed by Raisins, also titled Offrande à Bacchus, exhibited in 1868. This latter work is recorded at the Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu in Moulins. His Salon career is marked by medals in 1869, a second-class medal in 1884 and a silver medal at the 1889 Universal Exposition. In 1890, during the split of the Salon officiel, Kreyder leaves the Société des artistes français and joins the Société nationale des beaux-arts.
