Adolphe Pierre Leleux, also known as Adolphe-Pierre Leleux, was a French painter born in Paris in 1812 and died in the same city in 1891. He was the brother of the painter Armand Leleux.
A self-taught painter, he exhibited at the Salon from 1835 and trained in engraving in the studio of Alexandre Vincent Sixdeniers. In 1837, he decided to devote most of his work to painting.
A stay in Constantine in 1847, undertaken with Edmond Hédouin, accompanied the expansion of his subject matter to include Algeria, Spain, the Morvan and the Pyrenees. The following year, Leleux met the painter Charles Chaplin and introduced him to the French countryside. He is also described as a friend of Théophile Gautier and Gérard de Nerval.
Several paintings held in public collections attest to the range of subjects he explored. Sortie d’auberge en Vendée (1857), an oil painting on canvas measuring 98 × 138 cm, is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon; Une noce en Bretagne (1863) is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper. Le Mot d’ordre. 24 février 1848, an oil painting on canvas held at the Musée du Louvre, includes a precise date in its title. Dépiquage des blés en Algérie (1853) is held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. The circulation of his compositions is also attested by Cours de la Doufine (1844), an engraving by Charles Jacque after Leleux, held at the New York Public Library.
