Henri Person, a French painter born in Amiens in 1876 and who died in Paris in 1926, combined a divisionist practice with a body of work focused largely on the sea and the Mediterranean coastline. From 1905, his works attest to his adherence to Divisionism and the influence of Paul Signac’s theories; boats, seascapes, trees by the shore and coastal villages were among his preferred subjects. His acquisition of the boat L’Henriette II in 1906 reflects this enduring interest in coastal landscapes and activities.
In Paris, Person first set up his studio at 104 boulevard de Clichy, then at 48 boulevard des Batignolles. He began exhibiting at the Salon des artistes français in 1903; from 1910, he also took part in the Salon des indépendants. In 1913, the Bernheim-Jeune gallery devoted an exhibition to him.
Mobilised during the First World War, he was initially assigned to the movement of trains carrying wounded people at Mantes, then became a chauffeur to a captain in Antibes. He painted little during the conflict, as access to the ports was prohibited. After the war, he returned to Saint-Tropez and settled with his family on rue de la Garonne. His involvement in local life also continued with his election to the Saint-Tropez municipal council in 1925.
Person also played a role in the creation of the Museon Tropelen. On 4 September 1921, the municipal council unanimously approved the project to house works donated to the town. As curator of the museum, he brought together, among others, the painters Alphonse Stival, Carlos-Reymond and André Turin. In the winter of 1922, the works were hung in the municipal council chamber; the collection was subsequently enlarged by around thirty works assembled by Person. Among the artists who donated a work to the project were Pierre Bonnard, Charles Camoin, Albert Marquet and Louis Valtat. The Musée de l’Annonciade in Saint-Tropez holds five works by Person listed under the titles Bordeaux, Golfe-Juan, La calanque, Port méditerranéen and Le port de Toulon, les petites vedettes.
In 2015, the first monograph devoted to the painter was published, edited by Marie-Aude Bossard and entitled Henri Person, Les couleurs du Midi.
