Willem Kalf (1619–1693), originally from Rotterdam, spent time in Paris before returning to the Dutch Republic. He settled in Amsterdam in 1653. His early works depict kitchens and rural interiors, while his mature production is especially associated with sumptuous still lifes, or pronkstilleven. Precious vessels, glasses, carpets and fruit form arrangements whose objects are selected both for their visual qualities and for the wealth they signify.
In Still Life with Drinking-Horn at the National Gallery, light reveals the sheen of silver, the transparency of glass and the contrasting textures of a lemon. The horn’s curve answers that of the lobster positioned below. These correspondences animate a carefully ordered composition. Attention to reflections and differences between materials transforms the representation of luxurious possessions into an investigation of perception.
This profile brings together identity references for Willem Kalf and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
