Born into a family of painters and sculptors, Anton Faistenberger worked mainly in Vienna and Prague. His training remains uncertain, but landscapes made for Heiligenkreuz Abbey are documented as early as 1694. Commissions from the House of Liechtenstein subsequently involved him in decorative ensembles, sometimes in collaboration with other painters. Landscape forms the core of his work, alongside a practice of etching. His compositions engage with the Italian ideal landscape and Flemish and Dutch traditions. In his later production, clearly separated spatial planes give way to more direct observation of nature. Storm landscapes held by the Belvedere and the Slovak National Gallery demonstrate his attention to the changing appearances of the natural world.
