Carl Wilhelm Götzloff (1799–1866), born in Dresden, studied at the city’s academy under Caspar David Friedrich and Johan Christian Dahl. Settling in Naples in 1825, he worked among artists committed to observing landscape directly. Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies, appointed him court painter in 1835; southern Italy provided a major setting for his work.
Limestone Rocks, Sorrento (1858), at the Fondation Custodia, is painted in oil on paper mounted on cardboard. The close view explores the stone’s colours and texture. Antiquities by a Balcony Overlooking the Gulf of Naples (1826), at the National Gallery of Art, represents another aspect of his practice: this watercolour over graphite combines an Italian view with objects from antiquity.
This profile brings together identity references for Carl Götzloff and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
