Born in Loudun in 1926 and died in Tours in 2010, Jacques Voyet pursued a multifaceted career as a painter, sculptor, set designer and stage director. His documented career includes, in particular, illustrating a book published in 1953 and an exhibition at Galerie Stiebel in Paris in 1961. From 1966, he also worked in theatre, where he was involved notably in the creation of sets and costumes.
In 1968, he created the stage elements for Chant funèbre pour Ignacio Sánchez Mejías by Federico García Lorca, directed by Guy Suarès at the Comédie de la Loire, and contributed to the production of Zoo Story by Edward Albee at the same venue. The following year, his puppets appeared for the first time, according to the biographical source, in Le damné by René de Obaldia, also presented at the Comédie de la Loire in a production directed by Guy Suarès. For Les veuves by François Billetdoux, presented at the Espace Pierre-Cardin in 1972, Voyet created twenty-one figures, each two metres tall, which he named Les marionnettes shamanes. He later founded the Théâtre de marionnettes Jacques Voyet; in 1984, he directed and choreographed Les possédées there at the Théâtre national de Chaillot.
Voyet took part in the group exhibition L’École de Paris at Galerie Charpentier in 1957, and later in the Salon des peintres témoins de leur temps at the Musée Galliera in 1974, devoted to the theme “La rue”. Galerie Alain Daune in Paris also presented his work in 1980, 1984 and 1990. One example of his painting, Dans la rue, is described as a signed oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm; its reverse bears a label from Galerie L’Orangerie in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and a stamp from Galerie Daune in Paris. Works by the artist are held at the Musée national d’Art moderne in Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours. In 2012, an exhibition of his paintings and puppets was organised at the Espace culturel de la Douve in Langeais.
