The French painter, decorator and lithographer Jean-Pierre Moynet was born in Paris in 1819 and died there in 1876. He was a pupil of Léon Cogniet. In 1858, he accompanied Alexandre Dumas to Russia and the Caucasus, following the Volga as far as Astrakhan; a signed watercolour dated 1859 depicts a reception attended by Dumas, while a text by Moynet on the coast of the Caspian Sea appeared in Le Tour du monde in 1860. His work as a theatre decorator included Les Gardes forestiers, a drama by Dumas dated 1858, and Lalla-Roukh, an opéra-comique by Hippolyte Lucas and Michel Carré (1862).
In 1873, he published L’envers du théâtre : machines et décorations with Hachette, a book illustrated with sixty woodcut vignettes by his hand. Among the works attributed to him is also La Vierge et l’Enfant, an oil on canvas from 1859 held at the National Pinacotheca of Athens.
