Édouard Cortès’s work focuses primarily on Parisian scenes, observed through changes in the time of day, light and weather conditions, as well as the passing of the seasons. This attention to the city is evident from his first participation in the Salon des artistes français, in 1902, where he exhibited nocturnal streets of Paris.
The son of the painter Antonio Cortés y Aguilar, Édouard Cortès studied in Paris at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts from 1899 to 1904. A member of the Société des artistes français, he exhibited his paintings there every year. In 1915, he received a silver medal at the Salon des artistes français and a gold medal at the Salon des indépendants.
The titles presented at the Salon des indépendants attest to the diversity of the subjects addressed: Coin de Paris and Effet de lumière in 1927, two canvases entitled Intérieur en Bretagne in 1928, followed by Soir en Bretagne and Effet de lampe in 1929. Paris; Place Saint-Michel provides a concrete reference among the works: this oil on canvas measures 46 × 54.8 cm and is signed in black at the lower right. The painting is registered under number EC-CEC-2025/39 by the Comité Édouard Cortès and is to be included in the supplement then in preparation for the catalogue raisonné. The catalogue raisonné of the painted œuvre compiled by Nicole Verdier comprises two volumes, published in 2002 and 2009.
