An engraver active in Amsterdam, Geertruydt Roghman belonged to a family of artists. Her series of five female occupations depicts domestic work, including sewing, spinning and preparing food. As prints, these scenes circulated differently from paintings intended for an individual collector. The women are presented primarily through their activities, in interiors furnished with the implements required for their everyday labour.
The Rijksmuseum dates Woman Spinning and Woman Cooking from this series to 1648–1650. In the former, a child sits on a foot warmer beside the spinning wheel, while bundles of fibre and working tools lie on the floor. In the latter, the cook prepares food beside the hearth. A hanging bunch of garlic and cooking utensils establish the ordinary surroundings in which the figure works.
This profile brings together identity references for Geertruydt Roghman and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
