The Belgian painter and printmaker Paul Daxhelet was born and died in Liège; he also practised drawing and watercolour. Trained at the Académie des beaux-arts de Liège, he studied under François Maréchal, Jacques Ochs and Émile Berchmans, then attended the Académie Julian in Paris in 1926. In the 1930s, sporting subjects became prominent in his work, particularly boxing, which he practised himself; his painting was described at the time as Impressionist. After the First World War, he worked mainly in the south of France.
After the Second World War, his travels took him to Africa, South America, India, the Far East and Polynesia, among other places; a first visit to the Belgian Congo is dated to 1951. He brought back sketches and drawings from these journeys, which served as the basis for paintings whose subjects include landscapes, wildlife, inhabitants, markets and dancers. According to the biographical notice, colour and movement characterise the compositions he derived from them.
From 1957 to 1970, he taught at the Académie de Liège. Works are recorded at the Cabinet des Estampes in Liège and Brussels. An Album de l’Exposition de l’Eau, dated 1939, is associated with his name in the art collections of the University of Liège.
