Born in Paris in 1884 under the name Charles Henri Maxime Reymond, he signs his work Carlos-Reymond, with a hyphen, the form by which he is also known; he dies in Nice in 1970. At the age of sixteen, he receives advice and encouragement from Claude Monet, then settles in Saint-Tropez in 1903, where he becomes a pupil of Paul Signac and is introduced to Divisionism. His early work is associated with views of Paris, whose streets provide subjects for animated compositions; sources describe his first paintings as Neo-Impressionist and his practice as Pointillist.
In Saint-Tropez, he draws and paints tartanes in watercolour, while the port and the town become recurring subjects from 1904 onwards. His repertoire also spans several cities: he paints Florence in 1902 and 1921, Concarneau in 1915 and 1925, and Le Havre in 1924. He also works in Tunis, Sousse and Gabès, listed as subjects in 1929 and 1946, in Algiers in 1930, and then in Santa Catalina, Seville, in 1932. Sources note Pointillist works from his earliest productions to his most recent, indicating the persistence of this practice in his work.
His practice also includes engraved illustration: he produces 52 original woodcuts for Douze chansons de route, a book published in 1924. In 1926, six original woodcuts by him accompany L’habitation provençale by René Darde. In Paris, he takes part in the Salon des indépendants from 1905 to 1921 and becomes a member in 1916; the Galerie Barreiro presents his Œuvres nouvelles in 1937. The exhibition Cinquante ans de peinture is held at the Château Grimaldi in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1958; in 1965, the Galerie Le Nouvel Essor presents his watercolours and drawings from 1904 to 1964, and the Musée Masséna devotes an exhibition to him in 1969.
Among the works held in public collections is Les hommes rouges, an oil on canvas dated 1926, at the musée des beaux-arts de Brest. Works are also listed at the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Musée national d’art moderne and the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac; the Musée Saint-Loup in Troyes holds the drawing Sur les quais.
This profile brings together identity references for Carlos-Reymond and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
