格蕾塔·魏格納

Born : 1885Died : 1940Documented citizenships : France

Gerda Wegener, born Gottlieb, develops a body of painting and illustration between Copenhagen and Paris. Trained at Copenhagen’s art school for women, she favours a supple, decorative line. Settling in Paris in 1912, she contributes to fashion magazines and illustrated periodicals, including La Vie parisienne and Fantasio.

Her portraits give a central place to Lili Elbe, her partner and model. The Musée national d’art moderne holds Lily, dated 1922 in its catalogue: this oil on canvas represents Elbe and was previously titled Portrait de femme. In Dame à l’anémone (1922), also held at the Centre Pompidou, the model appears in profile. These two paintings connect the illustrator’s graphic elegance with a sustained engagement with the painted portrait as an artistic form.

This profile brings together identity references for 格蕾塔·魏格納 and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
