Born in Krementchouk, then in the Russian Empire and now in Ukraine, Emmanuel Mané-Katz (Mane Leyzerovich Kats, 1894–1962) devoted a significant part of his work to the figures and traditions of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. His oil paintings depict, in particular, Hasidic figures, rabbis, Jewish musicians, beggars and yeshiva students; they also deal with landscapes, still lifes, the life and folklore of the shtetl.
He studied at the fine arts school in Kyiv and in Vilnius. After settling in Paris again in 1921, while fighting continued in his hometown during the civil war, he became a French citizen in 1928. In the year he became a French citizen, he made his first trip to Mandatory Palestine. In 1931, his painting The Wailing Wall received a gold medal at the Paris Exposition.
Works held by institutions include Invocation, dated 1956 and held at the Emmanuel Mané-Katz Museum in Haifa, and Le Rabbin, dated 1960 and listed as held at the Musée du Petit Palais de Genève. Mané-Katz bequeathed his paintings and a major personal collection of Jewish ritual art to the city of Haifa. In 1953, he also donated eight paintings to the Glitzenstein Museum in Safed. In Haifa, Mayor Abba Hushi provided him with a building on Mount Carmel to house his works; this venue became the Mané-Katz Museum.
