Born in Dirschau on 1 October 1863 and deceased in Ambach in 1956, Alf Bachmann settled in Munich in 1891. His exhibition history is documented in Königsberg from as early as 1885, where he took part in exhibitions until 1927, and at Munich’s Glaspalast from 1887 onwards. The biography accompanying the auction results outlines a broad geography of his work: Bachmann undertook study trips to Schleswig-Holstein, Iceland, Scandinavia, the Scilly Isles, Normandy, Portugal, Tenerife, Egypt and Spitzbergen. It also records regular summer stays in Skagen, Jutland, a stay in La Plata in 1920, and activity in Ambach, on the shore of Lake Starnberg, from 1941 onwards.
The works listed in the sale entries attest to his practice of painting and printmaking. Among the cited examples is the oil on panel Am Hafen von Norderney, signed and dated 1922, as well as an oil on canvas from around 1910, signed “A Bachmann”. The titles Am Hafen von Norderney and Küste refer to coastal subjects; the latter is described as having been executed in charcoal and pastel in 1943. The gouache Morgenwind und Morgenwolken, dated and located in Munich in 1942, adds to these examples of works on paper. Two views of Copenhagen, described as colour etchings and signed by hand “Alf. Aug. Bachmann”, also attest to his printmaking practice.
