The German photographer, painter and graphic artist Albert Hennig (1907–1998) developed a practice that moved from photography to painting after his training at the Bauhaus. Born in Leipzig into a working-class family, he grew up in the Kleinzschocher district. A self-taught photographer, he began with a Zeiss Ikonta 6 × 9 cm camera and submitted a series of photographs with his application to the Bauhaus in Dessau.
Admitted in 1932, he studied there until 1933, mainly advertising and photography. His teachers in Dessau and later in Berlin included Josef Albers, Walter Peterhans, Hinnerk Scheper, Joost Schmidt, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. In terms of their subjects and style, his photographs are associated with the socially oriented worker photography of the Weimar Republic, with which he maintained active contacts in Leipzig. This orientation is evident in “Kinder der Straße”, a series made at the request of the social-democratic Kinderfreunde movement. The images were destroyed by the Nazis in 1933, during the occupation of the SPD office in Leipzig.
After the end of the Nazi regime, Hennig was among the founders, in 1945, of the “Bildender Künstler” group at the Kulturbund in Zwickau. He served as secretary of the Kulturbund in Zwickau from 1948 to 1951 and was responsible, on behalf of the FDGB, for exhibitions organised in the district’s workplaces; in 1952–1953, he was the senior official responsible for the visual arts in the district of Chemnitz. Alongside these duties, he practised painting and drawing, before later devoting himself exclusively to painting. The photographs from 1928–1933 were exhibited at the Willy-Brandt-Haus in Berlin in 2010 and at the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg in 2014. His watercolours and pastels were shown at the Galerie am Sachsenplatz in Leipzig in 1992; in 2013, the Anhaltischer Kunstverein in Dessau presented the artist under the title “Albert Hennig, der feinsinnige Betonbauer”. Part of his photographic estate, including period prints as well as film and glass-plate negatives, some dating from the Bauhaus period, was acquired with the support of the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen. Hennig received the Max-Pechstein-Preis in 1991 and the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, in 1996.
