Walter Leblanc

Born : 1932Died : 1986Documented citizenships : Belgium

The Belgian artist Walter Leblanc, born in Antwerp in 1932 and deceased in Silly in 1986, developed a body of work in which material and torsion became essential means of renewing painting. Alongside his artistic training, he studied advertising and graduated in 1951. In 1958, he became a founding member of the G58 Hessenhuis group.

In his paintings, Leblanc gradually moved away from oil in favour of surfaces made from materials such as sand, fabric, nylon, tin lids or sticks. This material transformation accompanied a shift towards increasingly pronounced abstraction and monochrome. From 1959, torsion became a central element of his work: made notably with cotton, plastic or metal threads, it introduced rhythm, light and repetition. Explored across different media, this practice is described as belonging to visual and kinetic art.

In 1977, he became a lecturer at the Hoger Instituut voor Bouwkunst en Stedebouw in Antwerp, where he taught colour to future architects and designers. From 1981, he worked on the decoration of the Simonis metro station in Brussels. After his death, his wife completed the project based on his plans and instructions, and inaugurated the station in 1986. An exhibition devoted to the artist is listed at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels in 2011. The Oniris gallery lists a catalogue raisonné devoted to Walter Leblanc, attributed to Nicole Leblanc and published in 1997.
