An Austrian painter born and died in Vienna (1856–1928), Camilla Friedländer devoted most of her work to small-format still lifes and miniatures painted in oil on wood. In these, she depicted kitchen and household objects, often of Oriental origin, as well as antiquities, flowers and dead animals.
The daughter of the genre painter Friedrich Friedländer, she received her artistic training from her father and shared his studio. Their travels took them to Italy, the Orient and Paris, where she stayed to continue her studies. In 1889, her father received the title of “Ritter von Malheim”, to which the longer form of her name, Camilla Edle von Malheim Friedländer, refers.
She presented a kitchen still life at the international art exhibition at the Glass Palace in Munich in 1879, then began exhibiting at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna in 1882. She also took part in events organised by the Austrian Art Association and in the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago; a work shown at the Crystal Palace in London earned her a medal. In 1891, Emperor Franz Joseph I purchased Oriental Objects, an oil painting shown at the 20th exhibition of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna.
On her father’s death in 1901, she entered the Salesian Sisters’ convent in Vienna and gave up painting.
