The Dutch painter Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraaten lived from 1622 to 1666. Churches occupy an important place in his views of towns and villages. In Zutphen, two views of the Walburgiskerk and its tower are dated around 1663. These unsigned, undated sheets combine graphite and black chalk; colour and wash were added later.
The Rijksmuseum holds The Ruins of the Old Town Hall of Amsterdam after the Fire of 7 July 1652, an oil on canvas catalogued between 1652 and 1666. The ruined building stands on the Dam. At the Nationalmuseum, a graphite drawing of a Village Church is attributed to him through comparison with other Beerstraaten family sheets, underlining the need to distinguish the different hands within this artistic circle.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraaten and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
