A landscape painter associated with Haarlem, Salomon Rombouts trained with his father, Gillis Rombouts, who was also a painter. He became a member of the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1678, then left for Italy and settled in Florence in 1690. Winter landscapes recur in his output: he painted them on several occasions, drawing inspiration from the work of Isaac van Ostade. A biographical source also notes the influence of Jacob van Ruisdael and Cornelis Decker.
A painting entitled “Schlittschuhläufer und ein Pferdekarren auf einem gefrorenen Kanal” — skaters and a horse cart on a frozen canal — is described as an oil on wood measuring 35.5 × 25.3 cm. The entry states that it bears the signature “SRombouts” at the lower left. Works mentioned in collections include “Wintergezicht” at the Rijksmuseum, “Forest Entrance” at the Louvre (61 × 85 cm) and “Village Festival” at the Gallerie di Palazzo Leoni Montanari in Vicenza. “Landscape with a Farm”, an oil on canvas measuring 45 × 57 cm listed at the Wallace Collection, is given as attributed to Rombouts.
