Pieter Brueghel the Younger, born in Brussels around 1564–1565, was the son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Established as a master in Antwerp by 1584–1585, he directed a workshop that widely disseminated his father’s compositions. He also painted subjects of his own invention, arranging village celebrations and groups of figures from an elevated viewpoint. His activity transmitted a family repertoire well beyond its first generation.
The Census at Bethlehem in the Museum Mayer van den Bergh combines biblical narrative, winter landscape and everyday activities. Variations in colour and individual details demonstrate a process of adaptation. Examination of surviving versions also reveals the importance of preparatory drawings in this transmission. Comparison of the Adorations of the Kings studied by the National Gallery shows that copying could involve changes of format and composition.
