Dutch painter, draughtsman, engraver and print dealer Abraham Rademaker develops a body of work in which topographical drawings and painted landscapes sit side by side. He produces landscapes in the Italianate style, among other works, but is best known for his urban landscapes and drawings of buildings intended for engraving. Some landscapes and depictions of buildings are also executed on commission.
He is self-taught; his father, Frederik Rademaker, is a glass craftsman or glazier. In the eighteenth century, his topographical images and prints are sought after by collectors. He draws around 700 castles.
The volumes bringing together his engravings, published from 1725 onwards, are particularly popular. They include the *Cabinet der Neederlandse Oudheeden en gesigten*, which comprises three hundred prints. In 1750, Jan van Gool includes a biography of Rademaker in his *De nieuwe schouburg der Nederlantsche Kunstschilders en schilderessen*. A sheet attributed to the artist, entitled *Klassische Landschaft mit Figurenstaffage*, is described as executed in pen and brown brush, with a little black chalk; it measures 24 × 36.6 cm.
This profile brings together identity references for Abraham Rademaker and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
