Anthonie Palamedesz.

Born : 1601Died : 1673

Antonie, or Anthonie, Palamedesz (1601–1673) worked principally in Delft, joining its Guild of Saint Luke in 1621. A portraitist and genre painter, he developed small-scale interior scenes. He also collaborated with architectural painters, including Dirck van Delen, adding figures to their compositions.

Merry Company at the Städel Museum, dated around 1630–1635, is painted in oil on oak and brings men and women together around a table covered with a cloth. Elegant gatherings form one strand of his repertoire, alongside military guardrooms. In Soldiers in a Guardroom (1647), held by the Rijksmuseum, an officer issues orders while other men warm themselves beside the hearth. Lighting distinguishes the principal figures and gives structure to their collective activity.
