The square, the preferred format for her canvases from 1965 onwards, and the exploration of the vibration of black and white in several series are essential reference points in the work of Aurelie Nemours. Born Marcelle Baron in Paris in 1910 and deceased in the same city in 2005, the French artist and painter chose to write her first name without an accent: Aurelie. She was enrolled at the École du Louvre from 1929 to 1932, then attended Fernand Léger’s studio between 1948 and 1951. She first exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1944, then joined the Espace group in 1957.
From 1965 onwards, the square format became her preferred choice for canvases. In Sériels, Rythme du millimètre and Point pluriel, created in 1976 and 1977, Nemours explores the vibration of black and white: the titles of these series also invoke the notions of rhythm, measure and plurality. Her activities also included writing: she published the poetry collection Midi la lune in 1950. Stèle, a unique work, entered the national collections.
Her work also occupies an urban space through a work conceived for the city of Rennes: the ensemble comprises 72 columns of bluish granite, 4.50 metres high, inaugurated after the artist’s death. In 1994, she received the national grand prize for painting. In 2004, the Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris devoted a retrospective to her entitled « Rythme, nombre, couleur », bringing together in its title terms that are central to several of her series.
